the writing in this is airtight, though i can't decide if this should be a compliment or an indictment.

on one hand, spinel ending up with the diamonds makes perfect sense from a narrative perspective. it acts as a callback to and solution for the conflict raised at the very start of the movie, and it's a solution in which all parties benefit. but on the other hand, well…

i think we've all had times in our life where we've seen someone who's lonely and could obviously use a friend, but also we really, *really* wish we didn't have to be that friend. and maybe compassion compels us to reach out to them and try to be that friend. i think that's the right thing to do, but that doesn't stop us from gritting our teeth a little whenever we see them walking our way.

spinel may be our new best friend, but she is definitely *that* kind of friend. and so even though i think steven was right for trying to befriend her and saying that he'd never abandon her, it's also kinda hilarious that he dumped her off to the first willing party the instant they appeared. but i get it. spinel annoyed me too. yet even still…

i dunno. maybe it only irks me because of how this hypocrisy goes unacknowledged. but that could also have roots in canon, since this seems like the sort of move his mom would've probably done.

*from lyra:* "he cares about being kind, but he doesn't care about her."

### #memorylog *12.p.a1: john*

he moved into my neighborhood, but i don't think he was around for more than a summer.
he tried to peer pressure me into doing shit i didn't want to do. he called us "best friends" but tried to use it as a bargaining chip more than as a genuine expression. i think i called him out on that at one point.

### #memorylog *16–17.p.b4: casey.*

i've been thinking about him a lot recently, in part because he seems to be the closest to what i imagine an irl tails would look like. he was kind of a loser. he was dorky and awkward and nervous laughed after a lot of the things he said. i'm pretty sure he looked up to me, and maybe even had a crush on me. he played the piano but was very much a beginner; his playstyle was very hesitant and delicate. i bet he touches himself very softly when he gets off.
